SPOTLIGHT
2016-2017
SPOTLIGHT IS THE FIRST INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE WHEN USERS TURN ON THEIR DEVICE. DESIGNED AS A VIBRANT, EVER-CHANGING PLATFORM, THESE SCENES CAN REACT TO CONTEXT, ENVIRONMENTS AND USERS THEMSELVES. THEY ALLOW FOR USER LOGIN AND STARTUP PROCESSES, WHILE FEATURING THE BEST NEW CONTENT MIXED REALITY HAS TO OFFER.
STARTUP SEQUENCE
Startup brings all the core hardware and software services online and defines the experience that welcomes customers back to our device. We aspire to front-load our processes so they complete before the user even puts the device on. By sequencing the steps strategically and providing relevant user cues through LED feedback, audio and display, we create an efficient, clear and inspiring flow.
A DESIGN FRAMEWORK
The Spotlight framework immerses the user and transforms their environment as soon as the device is on. Digital worlds spill into their space, react to their surroundings and change based on the seasons and time of day. The unifying portal connects worlds and acts a beacon for logging in and spawning the Launcher.
CONTEXTUAL
TO SPACE
By creating a system that is contextually adaptive to space, these scenes can have infinite permutations. This adds to the excitement and ever-renewing quality of the Landscape. It emphasizes Mixed Reality as a contextual and revolutionary medium.

ENGAGE ARTISTS
By sourcing artists and creators, Spotlight can become a showcase for innovation in Mixed Reality and provide an awe-inspiring front door to our device. With curated partnerships it extends the Magic Leap brand as a champion for artists, musicians and designers.

AUTHENTICATE USERS
The last step in the Startup process is authenticating our users. We have designed the framework to be modular so it can provide a consistent and reliable login experience no matter what the scene. Login can occur through numeric passcode or eye recognition when enabled.
INITIAL SCENE
FLOATING ISLANDS
CONCEPT IMAGERY
The initial scene is designed to fit Magic Leap’s aesthetic and provide the infrastructure. This image became the inspiration for that first scene. The sequence above shows the creation of these types of concept images.
TRANSLATION TO 3D
When we translate visual concepts into 3d, we outline technical constraints and dive deep in the creative details. I sourced and directed The Mill as we refined the styles and moved towards production.
WIREFRAME FLOWS
In parallel to the art efforts, the OS team creates user flows and specifications for our engineers. The constraints shape our designs and the designs push constraints.
GUI SPECIFICATIONS
Layouts are also specified and interactive elements reference our toolkit. With the initial designs on device, we iterate through details and animations.
