MIXED REALITY MUSEUM
2008-2009
WITH THE BIRTH OF MIXED REALITY, NEW ENVIRONMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE ARE CREATED. THIS MUSEUM ACTS AS FOUR BUILDINGS AT ONCE AND IS EXPERIENCED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE LENS. THE PHYSICAL ACTS AS AN ARMATURE WHILE THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMS AROUND IT DAILY, MONTHLY AND YEARLY.
A first exploration into Mixed Reality and Architecture.
The focus was to design a building where the Physical and Digital infrastructure were created at the same time. My later research allowed me to show these ideas through matchmoving rather than animation.
DIGITAL BUILDING MATERIALS
The interplay between digital and physical will be crucial in Mixed Reality Architecture. Physical boundaries provide real-world constraints (sound, touch, tectonics), while the digital materials expand the potential for sensory and transformable spaces. Similar to an object like the iPhone, the designed infrastructure brings only half of the solution and the digital potential given to users (akin to iPhone apps or software programs) allows for emergent possibility.
DIFFERENT PERCEPTUAL LAYERS
Multiple realities can be perceived simultaneously by different patrons. Although the physical infrastructure is the same, four buildings exist here in one - a museum, an observatory, a theater and an arena. These digital buildings can change frequently and encourage users to visit the physical space on a regular basis.
VARIABLE CIRCULATION
User paths for each experience are distinct and can be tailored to the function of the current digital content. The physical form (in steel, wood and concrete) is designed to be an armature for these paths/spaces and it acts as a canvas for digital content to play upon. For this reason, having distinct spatial types, sizes and shapes allows the building to accommodate diverse digital creations and physical hybridizations.
